Emma Louise Tinniswood
From my very first creative writing piece aged 5, I have always been passionate about stories and storytelling. Combined with my love of the theatre and teaching I have been fortunate to write for students aged from 5 to 18 and provide them with new material to work with in class, for examinations, festivals, auditions and performances.
I have been a teacher, writer, director and theatre practitioner for over 20 years. I studied Drama and Music at Royal Holloway followed by Applied Theatre at Central School of Speech and Drama. I then gained my QTS with the University of London and following my love of History gained my M.Litt in Family, Local and Social History with the University of Dundee. I am in the process of putting my PhD proposal together uniting History and Theatre. I also attended the Royal Court Young Writers programme in 2006 under the tutorship of award winning playwright, Jane Bodie and have also worked with her on projects with my own playwriting students.
I have taught Drama and Music in prep and senior schools as well as youth theatres and as a private acting coach. As a teacher I have always found I needed a huge amount of material for work with LAMDA and Trinity Exams, Festivals and Auditions and also as part of our schemes of work within the curriculum. Over the years I found that the material available didn't always suit the needs of my students and casts and I therefore started to write monologues, duologues, scenes, plays and musicals. As a Drama teacher in schools I also write entire schemes of work for Key stages 1,2,3 and 4 as well as teaching GCSE Drama and A Level Theatre Studies.
All of the work has been workshopped with my own students and I have developed the pieces with their help to understand what they like, and don't like! The plays have all been used for Festivals, Trinity and LAMDA individual and Group examinations and have been workshopped in rehearsals with the students. My full length plays have also been used for Drama Festivals such as the Woking Drama Festival at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre and the Leatherhead Drama Festival at Leatherhead Theatre.
Some of my duologues and monologues have been previously and currently published through LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) on their Set Acting Syllabus as well as in their book of Monologues for Young Actors.
I am currently working on a collection of new plays, written for young actors aged 11-18 as well as an educational book for Primary Drama.
All my plays are available for performance in schools and youth theatres, so please enquire for further details. I always love hearing from other teachers and students about my pieces being used in exams and festivals so please do get in touch and let me know which your favourites are and where you are performing.
Best wishes,
Emma
