HOPE

HOPE

Hope is set against the backdrop of World War Two, yet the war plays a background role to the story of the characters in the play.  The play tells the story of a group of children in 1940, and what happens when a stranger arrives.
Poppy's house is bombed and she runs, that's what her mums had always told her to do. Count to 3 and run.  She keeps on running and finds herself in a small village. She meets Agatha who is playing with her doll by the river.  Agatha says she will take her back to her house in the village to get her cleaned up.
But all is not what it seems and a number of other children in the village, seem to live in the shadow of Agatha and Poppy begins to think that something isn't quite right.  Agatha takes her to the barn because her mother doesn't like strangers in the house and when she is left the door slams and from the shadows, Hope appears.

A ghost story, a murder mystery, a psychological drama - the play has many themes which explore the innocence and not so innocent childhoods of these children as well as mental health in children and adults.

THE PLAY

The play is written for 12 characters and also has an ensemble section, but this could be adapted.  When it was first produced all our actors also played the ensemble roles.

It has a running time of about 50 minutes.

The play is available for performance. Please contact me at [email protected]
