Millie's Dream

MILLIE'S DREAM

Millie has always loved stories - ever since she was a little girl.  One day, on the way back from the beach with her parents and brother, there is a car accident and her mother dies.  Millie is left unable to walk, suffering temporary paralysis.

She spends day after day in the hospital, amidst nightmares of the accident.  To cope, she makes up and write stories with the help of the nurses and hospital janitor.  Then story centres around a little girl called Mollie, who wants to climb a ladder to get to the moon to rescue her mother who has been trapped by the evil frost king.

Millies father is not interested in her writing, and barely visits her in hospital as he blames her for the accident.  But with the help of her friends in the hospital the story is finished and performed just in time for Christmas.  Millie and her father are reunited.

THEMES

The play explores a number of themes:
* Loss
* Family and friendship
* Dreams
 * Writing and storytelling

THE PLAY
This play was premiered at the Queen Charlotte Theatre, Richmond in June 2017.  It was subsequently performed at the Woking Drama Festival in 2017 gaining nominations for Best Young performer and best new Writing, and at The Exchange Theatre, Twickenham in December 2018.

The play has 16 characters and an ensemble.  In the original production we had only 9 young actors and parts were doubled and everyone played the ensemble roles.  It is however important that young Millie and older Millie are played by two separate actors.  In the original version we doubled up parts and created a similarity between the the nice and mean characters in the hospital and the moon.  Therefore the Doctor whom Millie disliked, also played Queen Jezabel on the moon.
